Rumored iTunes TV Subscriptions on Apple Tablet
| December 28, 2009 | Posted by George Marks under Apple, Electronics, Gadgets, iPhone, iPod, Mac, Tech News |

More rumors on the Apple tablet. Rumor has it that WSJ, subscription, has cited sources that say CBS and Disney are considering a partnership with Apple on offering TV subscriptions via iTunes. If this were to take place it could pose a serious threat to cable and satellite network service providers.
This technology would allow you to watch your favorite TV shows wherever you are; on your iPod, iPhone; on your notebook.
The Apple Tablet is supposed to be a multimedia gadget and is larger than the iPod touch or iPhone, but smaller than a laptop. There is not really anything new in this, but if Apple is able to offer a-la-carte TV service via iTunes, the Apple Tablet would be a very sexy device to show the service off. The majority of users would watch on other devices though, including the good old fashion TV.
Apple advert patent filed, “enforcements”

Apple’s plans for advanced on-device advertising have prompted more horrified editorial, this time courtesy of the New York Times. The surprise is earned by the Cupertino company’s patent application for an “enforcement routine” whereby on-screen adverts can not only seize focus from the current activity – whether that be a browsing session on an iPhone, video playback on an Apple TV or typing on a MacBook Pro – but force the user to sit through it until they can show they’ve paid attention by clicking a specific button or answering a question.
The motivation for the intrusion, Apple’s patent explains, would be cheaper access to the latest kit. Companies would subsidize the hardware in return for the user agreeing to pay attention to the adverts; if, at a future point, the marketing messages got too much, the user could settle up for the full cost of the device and banish the ads.
To stop you from viewing the advert as a timely prompt to take a bathroom break or make a drink, the so-called “enforcements” used to assure viewer presence can escalate in their complexity. What starts out as a simple tap or clicking on on-screen button, for instance, can become typing in various keyboard combinations, a date or hunting down a rapidly shrinking on-screen control, anything Apple can think of in order to make sure “an attentive user” is present.
Microsoft attempted to patent a similar ad-based system for pay-per-use functionality at the end of last year. That system used hardware throttling to portion out different uses of a high-spec PC, while potentially costing only the same as an entry-level model.
Apple TV 3.0 tipped in new iTunes

An upcoming update to the Apple TV has been tipped by a change in Terms & Conditions for the iTunes Store. The new agreement – which is shown as of today – lists that “you can now use iTunes LPs and iTunes extras on Apple TV with software version 3.0 or higher”; however Apple are yet to release version 3.0 for their set-top box.
It looks likely, then, that not only is a new version of the Apple TV’s firmware incoming, but that it will add extra support for some of the newer multimedia features of iTunes that were added in the recent iTunes 9 release. These included various additional media bonuses intended to encourage the purchase of entire albums rather than “cherry picking” specific tracks; iTunes LP, for instance, mimics the idea of a traditional vinyl LP sleeve with exclusive notes, artwork and the like.
There’s also mention of a change in how/when film rentals can be switched between devices. Apple have been criticised for leaving the Apple TV behind in comparison to the rest of their line-up; SlashGear columnist described the platform as needing to go “from hobby to strategic product“.
