One of the major difficulties facing YouTube was what to do with all of the music videos posted on their site. Sure, many top artists have and recording companies start their own YouTube channels to provide music lovers with tunes. However, just as many are posted by fans. They might have their hearts in the right place, but copyright violation is still copyright violation, no matter what the intent.

YouTube’s solution? A whole new site with music video uploads available only to artists and recording companies. This site, Vevo, launches today and will feature music from pop luminaries such as Lady Gaga, Mariah Carey, and 50 Cent.

Vevo will be more than just your typical depository, however. It is determined to be the home for online music videos. Submissions will include fully integrated lyrics synchronized with the video. It will also have a better sponsorship policy, as advertisers will be able to target audiences easier.

YouTube estimates that around 85% of music videos will become Vevo exclusives, the rest will remain on YouTube as before.
